The Humble Bitter Death of Walker Mettling*

Hello. My name is Walker. I died when I fell from the highest branches of a tree. Recently, in a brief trip back to the living (I disguised myself as a leaf and drifted through the doorway of my granddaughter's house, something I enjoy doing from time to time) I discovered that my great-granddaughter, a little blond-haired freckled girl, was writing about me in her journal. I hovered in the air and looked over her shoulder. This is what she wrote:

Today I have been thinking about Walker Mettling, who was my mother's grandfather. He died when he was a very old man with failing eyesight and brittle bones and purple veins and spots covering his skin from the sun that had shone down on his body while he had done so much living. The family says that walking out of his bedroom and through the hall was difficult enough considering the way his knees shook and sometimes buckled. My mother remembers having to link arms with him to walk down steps. So how he got to the field so far from home is a mystery. My uncle thinks he hitchhiked and my grandmother thinks he took a bus, but my mother shakes her head at all of their guesses. She never tells us what she believes.

I think that he walked.

I like to imagine that he woke up in the blackest hours of the night and stood and discovered that he was not trembling. He walked into the hallway and paused. His body was still. In the dark, silent hallway, he smiled. He didn't bother to change out of his pajamas. he just pulled on a pair of shoes and slipped out of the house. When he walked down the stairs he thought about my mother and hoped she was watching from her upstairs bedroom window to behold him stepping--so steady, so quick--into the night.

He walked for miles along the small country road until he reached a field and felt a tree beckoning. He stood at the base, looking up to the branches. For the first time in years, he could see without his glasses. Each leaf was distinct and inviting. There was one low branch; he pulled himself onto it.

The climb took time, and he felt old, but he made it. From the highest branch he could see the lights of his town in the distance. He could see the stars. The moon lay, only a sliver, on its back.

He sat on the highest branch for a long time and thought (of course) about his life. He remembered pulling puppet strings and kneading bread and riding his bicycle through city streets. He thought about all the women he had loved, the goat he had as a boy, the hills that surrounded him when growing up. He thought of camping and playing music, of the days he spent digging through wreckage to find treasures, of all the postcards he sent and packages he received in the mail. He remembered a morning in Norway when his heart broke, the ceiling of a wood cabin he stared at all night. He thought about his mother. He thought about his father. He thought about the child--me--that his granddaughter might have.

He felt something changing: it was the sun about to come up. He stepped on a branch, ready to go home, and as he heard the terrible cracking, felt the snap, he gasped. True, he had lived for so long, but he had meant to keep living.

At least, that is what I have decided happened, after hearing so many versions of the story.

No one agrees on how he got to the field or why he climbed the tree, or even what kind of tree it was. What they do know is that when my uncle and grandmother found him, he was on his back, facing the sky, and if it hadn't been for the blood that pooled around him, they would have thought he was gazing up at the sun and the clouds.

seen, as homework for her reading, if that's meaningful to you), SARAH
REITER (we're both from northeast Pennsylvania, so during my early
years on the Internet at my parents' house, she was probably somewhere
within ten miles having experiences) and JOANNA RUOCCO (back in town;
her new novel The Mothering Coven is out on Ellipsis Press). Note the
slightly earlier start time, and that we're rethinking the space to
accommodate more people if we need to, so you don't have to be the mug
caught trying to hear things from the bathroom. Snacks will be served,
and it'll be over before any show happening at Mars would even start.
You don't need to let us know you're coming anymore, but call me if
you don't know where we live.

department, be advised that Summer Street's Art Middleton (Tiny Hawks)
and Jenny Nichols (Pigeonfisher Magazine) are reading stories at my
and Walker's house tonight at 8pm. Cybele Collins (whose birthday it
is today!) will be illustrating live.

This is the next event in Walker's 1000 Stories series. He asked me
through the window in the kitchen to post about it on the list, since
he's in there listening to Kanye and making nice food, and I'm just
sitting here working on crap.

"WELL, YESTERDAY WAS CINCO DE MAYO! AND WE WERE HECKA BUSY AT THE FLOWER STAND AND MY BOSS WAS ALL YELLING AT ME OR WHATEVER AND MADE ME MAKE A LIVING MEXICAN FLAG. LIKE AN EAGLE FIGHTING A SNAKE ON A CACTUS OR WHATEVER.

IT WAS GOOD FOR A WHILE...UNTIL THE EAGLE HAD SOME TROUBLE.

IT WAS ON ONE OF THOSE LEASHES THAT WAS LIKE HECKA LONG. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I LET IT FLY A LITTLE, I MEAN IT WAS ON THE LEASH OR WHATEVER. SO I FIGURED IT'D BE COOL. BUT THEN IT WAS ACTING LIKE IT WAS CHOKING ITSELF AND IT STARTED GETTING ALL HECKA SHAKEY AND THEN SORTA PASSED OUT.

SO I TOOK IT OVER TO RITE AID TO GET SOME MEDICINE FOR IT OR WHATEVER. BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY. AND WHEN WE GOT BACK SOMEBODY STOLE THE CACTUS AND THE SNAKE WAS EATING THE FLOWERS OR WHATEVER...

YOU WANNA BUY A DEAD EAGLE."

each person was given an occupation and had to write a list of five things you'd find on your utility belt. then you'd pass your list to the right. Then you would pick one thing off of your neighbor's list and explain why someone of your occupation would have that utility item. i was a florist, my item was a snake.

The Little Old Men in the Backs of Their Heads

Even worse than the soldiers shooting and blowing up each other over there.
Ours and theirs.
Even worse than the old ladies in head scarves or not getting crushed or shot or maimed.
Even worse than the screaming fathers carrying their broken families and dead children in their arms, running for broken hospitals.
Even worse than the dead kids.
Even worse than dead kids who never even had a shot out the gates, are the little old men who lived in the backs of their heads.
Those little old men who'd never had the chance to wake them in the night, force them out of bed and on the hunt for a pen and a piece of paper...The little men who would have held the children's arms as though puppet's, making them draw things they'd never drawn before. Making them dance that crazy way that no one ever showed them. Making them climb trees and jump from high things. Those children who spoke words not of their own tongue? They were translating the words of the little old men. The ones we've killed.

But not only that! Those little men that live on in the heads of the children who we haven't yet killed...Those little men know what we've done to their kin. And many of them will scream and howl their mourning out of the darkness of those children. They'll rattle those children out of bed and out of childhood like swords. And instead of pens and paper and trees, they will dance to the music of violence and they'll move the children's hands towards guns.
And if there are no guns, then rocks.
And if there are no rocks, to lying smiles and bitterness.

Bitterness and a patient or impatient vengence.

My ending was criticized by the Publisher, Mr. Blue, as having nothing to do with the rest of the story. He ripped it apart and tossed down from his office to the first graders waiting to hear his opinion of their work. He screamed, "you're a drawer! A drawer not a writer!" Some of the kids made eye contact with me and shook their empathetic heads (almost saying, "that's what they told me..."), others covered their eyes and buried their faces in their hands.

Miraculously, all of their endings passed muster and got his stamp of approval!

Third Annual Field Recording Exchange!

Deadline: Saturday January 6th, 2008
Rules: Make a CD or Cassette of your collected field recordings, make some sort of explanatory insert and mail these to the other participants of the exchange.

* A field recording is an audio document recorded outside of a studio. Back in the day, ethnomusicologists and cultural anthropologists would record the music, songs, stories and sounds of people and nature, many of which no longer exist. This is the reason we still have the priceless recorded voices of freed slaves, Helen Keller, early mountain and native american music and all sorts of great and nasty things.

Through the exchanges I've conducted, people have produced recordings(on minidisc recorders, tiny answering machine tape recorders, normal analog tapes and other mediums) consisting of New York Subway holiday music, trips to the Vienna opera, trash trucks in South Korea, fatal New Orleans police brutality, video game music, interviews, radio style pieces, found cassette tapes, oblivious singing in the shower, children singing songs and folks dumping metal and glass down ancient grain silos.

We had stencil activities nearly everyday at summer camp.

On halloween, I made a pantyhose mask, stretching it over my notebook to paint it.

The kids at the summer camp were trying to make a huge mural with the theme of evolution, where evolution had taken horrifying turns giving bears 12 eyes and spider legs and flys wearing duck beaks. These were my suggestions...

I drew this on a napkin at a Providence Whole Foods, while I was trying to leave as an aquaintance was trying to discipline another woman's baby.

In a cabin in Vinal Haven. Me. Where I was stung by wasps while trying to go to the bathroom and got poison ivy while washing dishes in the ocean! [Note the canoe in the rain below the aliens, that's me and Ian Jerolmack before he left to go meet his girlfriend's parents!]

Special Delivery- a postcard play by Eric Gilyard

The set: An old Victorian style parlor. Two elderly men sit in similar high backed chairs. Between them is a table with a vase of flowers and a Tiffany style lamp Stage left, there is a large wooden door with a mail slot in it.

Old Man 1: Today’s the day, you know.
Old Man 2: Yes, I know.
OM1: The new genocide law goes into effect.
OM2: I know.
OM1: Everyone over the age of 65 has got to die today.
OM2: Hard to believe people voted for that.
OM1: It was the goddamned youth vote! More people under the age of 25 voted in this election than ever before.
OM2: And look where that got us!
OM1: I wonder how they’ll do it.
OM2: I hear they’re gonna sneak up on us in our sleep.
OM1: Leave it to the government to interrupt a good night’s sleep!

They laugh until they hear a knock at the door. They look at the door, and then each other then back at the door. Two small cards are pushed through the mail slot.

OM1: Oh, It’s just the mail.
OM2: A tad earlier than usual. (Looking at his pocket watch)
OM1 gets up goes to door and collects mail
OM2: What is it?
OM1: Postcard. There’s one for you too. Hands postcard to OM2 then sits.

They both read silently.

OM1: Well, I’ll be! They certainly found an efficient way to do it.
OM2: “quick and painless” the card says...

I say, Have you ever looked at the stars while you were working your way out of waist deep in quicksand in a creek in Kansas, pretty sure that single solitary pasture scarecrow you passed an hour ago was alive now, now that it was sundown and that the dark magic had turned his buttons to eyes and his stuffing straw to crinkled tree root bones and gnarled hands and feet, and that he’d watched you and your shadow, run down to the creek bottoms as he waited for sunset to pass, waiting for night to give him legs so he could run down after you, without the drowning nostalgia dancing in his button eyes of when he himself had been a boy, leaving early and skipping chores and walking to town to go to the fair, hoping to get a blue and a pink cotton candy, to eat them both simultaneously, of when he’d found that old house decorated for Halloween, vines hanging out of the windows and the cobwebs sweeping the porch, and the army of scarecrows, all of them standing at attention along the fence line, their eyes following him as he made his way up to the big house and stumbled inside to see the dusty museum, the old labels behind the bathroom mirror, the old books, the holes in the floor, the pealing wall paper, the pictures, the hope of money, but the old man was still there up in the master bedroom, sunset pouring through the filthy yellow curtains, a dried up mummy in his chair, king of the apricot people, emperor of the raisin things, and he’d coughed dust and pointed his crispy cracking hands, wanting the boy to touch him, and the boy saw him and his paper dry eyes and his long flat gray teeth and wanted to help him, he did not want to touch the old thing, that cracked dead moving thing, that seemed to come apart as it writhed in its reclining chair, and he’d been just a boy, not knowing better, and a boy he’d touched the old hollowed thing’s hand trying to help the man, but as the stars came up that night so long ago, he was nothing but a scarecrow aimed at the road, not to scare birds, but to attract children,

Water color of the Poseidon Mural (Painted by Tato) on the side of Eric's house that he's painting over as soon as he can afford the paint. (Note the drawing of a bicycle rack at the top. I was trying to get the marble mouthed bicycle guy to dig me up a rack. But he kept bringing me fenders.)
